When I am not working\, I am teaching and creating vinegar paint pieces plus mixed media art in my home studio in North Andover\, MA \nThis workshop will be a creative exploration of a Historical Finish from the 1700’s. You will have a chance to investigate your ability to create fantasy designs. There is no right way to explore this medium\, you can create amazing results on almost anything. A Great way to spend a hot summers day! \nWorkshop objective: \nIn this workshop\, students will begin by familiarizing themselves with the various materials used in folk-art painting\, including artists’ pigments\, learning how to handle\, purchase\, and store them properly. By the end of the course\, they’ll be able to craft a finished piece on a Masonite board\, incorporating all they’ve learned. Her work can be seen in “10 Years of the Artist Professional Toolbox”\, published by the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston. \nArtist’s Statement \nMy background in design helps to inform all of my work. The principles of design (balance\, unity\, harmony\, contrast\, emphasis\, scale\, and rhythm) and elements of design (point\, line\, plane\, texture\, and color) combine together to give my art substance. \nMy canvases and panels blend contemporary design with vinegar paint\, a late 18th century\, American technique of combining artists’ pigments and apple cider vinegar with dish soap or sugar. I discovered this form of painting when studying decorative finishes\, and it took hold of my imagination. \nVinegar paint provides a phenomenal degree of detail and precision. Intricate\, sharp lines and patterns pop from the pigment\, creating the optical illusion of depth. These patterns maintain a curious originality that is deepened by texture and the illusions of movement through out my art. These thoughtful juxtapositions work symbiotically to create a peaceful complexity. I pull from the macro view of the cosmos to the microbiology imagery in nature. \nMy work almost always starts from the smallest element to the largest. I’m passionate about the way this process allows the work to unfold as a meditation; shapes first emerge from a colored pencil sketch then continue to evolve through this exploratory paint process. As the vinegar dries the only thing left on the panels is the pigment. There is no suspension matter to interfere with the pigment. There is nothing between the viewer\, the textures and the colors. The final works\, with their intricate detail\, organic or geometric shapes\, and rich tones\, recall life’s impressions\, experiences\, and relationships. I was always intrigued by art\, and after retiring from an academic career in biology\, I learned printmaking through continuing education classes. I love creating prints using a variety of techniques and I enjoy teaching these skills to others! \nThis is a fun class and I encourage all levels of art participants to join me as we explore a printmaking technique called Direct Trace Monotype that does not need a press. I will demonstrate how to set up and create a direct trace monotype\, and offer guidance to help you achieve nice prints and learn this process. This class will allow you to explore a variety of materials and mark-making to create several prints and their ghosts! \nDirect Trace Monotypes are a kind of print that is “pulled” from a drawing made on an inked Plexiglas plate. This art process is a fun and easy way to create a unique print that has beautiful line quality similar to a soft-ground etching or charcoal drawing. Your source material can be a drawing\, sketch\, photograph or your imagination. This method is extremely flexible and works well for those who prefer to work abstractly\, spontaneously\, and for those who prefer to use a reference drawing or photo. Depending on time\, we may be able to explore printing with colored inks\, and create “ghost prints” – transferring the negative image left on the inked plexiglass onto a mulberry sheet by hand burnishing. It should be possible for each student to make several unique prints. \nMaterials you will need to bring to the workshop:\nYour drawings\, sketches or simple photographs\, 8” x 10” or 6” x 8” work well for this workshop \nPencils\, pens\, some colored pencils\, other mark-making tools (chopstick\, pinecone\, textured papers or objects that can be pressed or rolled against a surface; charcoal paper) \nEraser\, a 12” or 24” ruler (to set borders for your print; can also be used as a leaning bridge) \nDrawing paper \nTracing paper\, (9” x 12” or similar works well for our format) \nEasy lift Masking or Painter’s tape \nLeaning Bridge – if you have one\, please bring it!
