DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, July 11th\, 2026 (from 10 AM – 4 PM) for this exciting off-site Plein Air Painting workshop led by Ogunquit Art Association artist-member Russel Whitten.\n \nSuggested donation $75 \nLocated at Robert Laurent’s farm studio in Cape Neddick (Deidre O’Flaherty will meet participants at Barn Gallery and give the directions)\, this class will provide training in the direct observation of form and its surrounding elements. \nJoin Russel for a full day ‘en plein air’ in this watercolor workshop at the historic estate and studio site of the late Robert Laurent. \nThe beautifully maintained and privately owned property will provide the inspiration and be the subject matter for the day’s lesson. \nDirect observation and how we re-create natural elements with the use of watercolor.  Understandings of color\, value\, perspective and technique will all be demonstrated and geared towards the individual’s needs. \nA materials list will be sent at your request. \nPreregistration suggested. His painting experience include scenic artistry in theater painting at the Ogunquit Playhouse\, Good Theater in Portland Maine and Prescott Park \, Portsmouth NH. There is not much drawing but there is an emphasis on how to arrange shapes and colors. I will demonstrate how to plan and design a big floral painting and the best way to paint it. She is a recipient of a NH State Fellowship for the Arts\, a MacDowell Colony residency\, and a past Cummington Artist Colony resident. Dustan is represented by galleries across the US\, including Art Three in Manchester\, the Ogunquit Art Association in Maine. She’s a contributing writer to Art New England\, a frequent juror\, and gives demonstrations and workshops in watercolor\, art business\, and art history. Call Barn Gallery: 207-646-8400.  \nAbout The Workshop Instructor: Ethel HillsEthel Hills grew up amidst the orchards\, fields and hills of Hollis\, New Hampshire. While completing her B.A. at the University of New Hampshire\, she fell in love with the marshes and beaches of the seacoast region and eventually settled in Hampton. \nWhile working traditional clerical jobs\, she explored her creativity through needlework\, photography and rug hooking. Interest in developing her own rug designs brought her to a drawing class and the beginning of a love of drawing and painting. To improve her skills\, she actively pursued her study of art\, including traditional art courses at the University of New Hampshire and the New Hampshire Institute of Art. \nHills has been painting seriously for more than thirty years and is currently pursuing her art career from her studio at Lane House Arts Center in downtown Hampton. She is an active member of the Ogunquit Art Association\, New Hampshire Art Association\, the Abstract Artists Group of New England\, Women’s Caucus for Art\, and Newburyport Art Association. SUMMARY:Printmaking Without a Press: Direct Trace Monotypes Workshop with Jane Petschek | Ogunquit Art Association
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Barn Gallery in Ogunquit\, Maine on Tuesday\, August 18th\, 2026 (from 10 AM – 3 PM) for a Printmaking Without a Press: Direct Trace Monotypes Workshop led by Ogunquit Art Association artist-member Jane Petschek. \nSuggested Workshop donation: $75 \nPre-registration recommended. Call Barn Gallery: 207-646-8400.  \nAdditional InformationI am a professional printmaker and active studio artist at Running With Scissors Art Studios in Portland Maine. I was always intrigued by art\, and after retiring from an academic career in biology\, I learned printmaking through continuing education classes. I love creating prints using a variety of techniques and I enjoy teaching these skills to others! \nThis is a fun class and I encourage all levels of art participants to join me as we explore a printmaking technique called Direct Trace Monotype that does not need a press. I will demonstrate how to set up and create a direct trace monotype\, and offer guidance to help you achieve nice prints and learn this process. This class will allow you to explore a variety of materials and mark-making to create several prints and their ghosts! \nDirect Trace Monotypes are a kind of print that is “pulled” from a drawing made on an inked Plexiglas plate. This art process is a fun and easy way to create a unique print that has beautiful line quality similar to a soft-ground etching or charcoal drawing. Your source material can be a drawing\, sketch\, photograph or your imagination. This method is extremely flexible and works well for those who prefer to work abstractly\, spontaneously\, and for those who prefer to use a reference drawing or photo. Depending on time\, we may be able to explore printing with colored inks\, and create “ghost prints” – transferring the negative image left on the inked plexiglass onto a mulberry sheet by hand burnishing. It should be possible for each student to make several unique prints. \nMaterials you will need to bring to the workshop:\nYour drawings\, sketches or simple photographs\, 8” x 10” or 6” x 8” work well for this workshop \nPencils\, pens\, some colored pencils\, other mark-making tools (chopstick\, pinecone\, textured papers or objects that can be pressed or rolled against a surface; charcoal paper) \nEraser\, a 12” or 24” ruler (to set borders for your print; can also be used as a leaning bridge) \nDrawing paper \nTracing paper\, (9” x 12” or similar works well for our format) \nEasy lift Masking or Painter’s tape \nLeaning Bridge – if you have one\, please bring it! It is helpful to rest your hand over the print in progress to avoid unwanted marks\nWork Apron or clothes that might get inky \nI will provide ink (Charbonnel water-washable ink)\, plexiglass\, brayers\, ink knives\, ink palette\, disk barens\, and other printmaking tools \nPrintmaking Without a Press: Direct Trace Monotypes Workshop by Jane Petschek\n— Tuesday\, August 18 (From 10 AM – 3 PM)\n— Suggested donation: $75 \nPre-registration recommended. She was a member printmaking artist at Zygote Press in Cleveland OH and currently makes prints in her studio at Running With Scissors Art Studios in Portland ME. Jane’s intaglio prints have been juried into national and regional exhibitions\, including the Butler Institute of American Art Mid-year Show (Youngstown OH)\, The Danforth Museum Annual Exhibition (Framingham MA) and PenBay Maine Health Hospital Art Exhibition Program (Camden ME). DESCRIPTION:Join us at Barn Gallery on Thursday\, August 20th (at 6 PM) for a Barn Gallery Talk by our two Late-Summer Exhibition Showcase Artists: Amy Hagberg (Photography) and Carol MacLeod (Photography – Painting) \nMeet the artists\, see their work\, learn about their processes\, and ask questions. \nThese insightful and inspiring Gallery Talks always provide further insight into our exhibitions and give attendees the chance to hear stories + learn tips and tricks from present day juried artist-members of the Ogunquit Art Association\, Maine’s Original Artists’ Group (est. 1928). \nThis is a FREE event and it is open to the public. \nAbout Amy Hagberg – PhotographyARTIST STATEMENT: Amy J. Hagberg\nMy Work Illustrates the way time transforms the past. I utilize analog photography as an instrument of time; marking moments by opening a camera’s shutter. The old New England homesteads I often photograph symbolize people lost within the past. The reflection images\, all from a single negative\, compress what is behind and what is before into a single moment of now. Our perception of today is always colored by past experience and future dreams. \nI further investigate time through the slow exposures in my handmade pinhole cameras\, using 8″X10″ photographic paper for the negatives. This process mirrors the life experience: sometimes a horrible failure occurs\, and sometimes a surprise gift is bestowed. I also create composite images by physically combining two images. I adhere one image printed on translucent vellum over a second printed on cold press paper. This partially obscures the viewer’s gaze from the original image beneath and mimics the shape-shifting of time: the present reshaping our memory \nThe sculptures I construct for photographing are totum interpretations of lost people and places. Sometimes I burn these sculptures in effigy to set them free. I photograph these events with pinhole cameras\, the slow exposures capturing the light of spiritual release. \nThe past may never be revised. But we may choose to use the past as a vehicle to create something new. \nLEARN MORE: amyjhagberg.com \nAbout Carol MacLeod – Photography/PaintingARTIST STATEMENT: Carol Macleod\nI am a native of Maine and have worked in the field of psychiatry and nursing education. Now\, in my retirement\, I happily devote my time and energy to the creative processes of photography and painting. \nPhotography: Themes of my work include moods\, the environment in which we live\, abstractions\, the human figure and face\, and minimalism. My most recent project with photography is dolls that I have found in flea markets\, some disturbing\, some just old and well used and\, most certainly\, loved in the past. I feel these old and falling apart dolls and their fate to be indicative our culture’s view and treatment of aging women. In all of my photographs\, I integrate my instinct\, inspiration and ability to ‘see’. \nPainting: My body of work consists mostly of abstracts\, and bird portraits. I have found in my portraits of birds\, there is a bit of an unintentional self portrait depicting my mood and sense of humor.
