My prints focus on subjects and details that are often overlooked but can reveal fresh juxtapositions that challenge our first look and make us take a second.” \nSee an Ogunquit Art Association interview with Karen Bushold: CLICK HERE! \nLEARN MORE: busholdphoto.com \nAbout Carol\, Travers Lummus – PrintmakerARTIST STATEMENT: Carol Travers Lummus\n“One of the most difficult assignments for me to do is to explain what I do. I can readily explain the technique (the process of etching which can be found at my website)\, alas\, for me to explain the meaning of my work is like asking an author to draw a picture describing his novel … like asking a daisy to explain horticulture. With my line work\, I take spaghetti for a walk. That is when I am in my zone. Hal La Croix\, of Peterborough\, described my work as having a “warmth and spirit that forms coy statements on social conventions” and “refreshingly devoid of self-conscious artistic pretense.”” \nSee an Ogunquit Art Association interview with Carol\, Travers Lummus: CLICK HERE! \nLEARN MORE: carollummus.com \nBarn Gallery 2026: Exhibitions\, Gallery Talks\, Workshops\, Demos\, Auction\, More…Learn more about the Barn Gallery 2026 Schedule: barngallery.org/2026-season \nLEARN MOREConnect With #BarnGallery on Instagram\n\n	\n	\n \n	\n \n SAVE THE DATE: For 46 years\, Barn Gallery has open\n \n \n	\n\n	\n \n ATTENTION ARTISTS: The Ogunquit Art Association — \n \n \n	\n	\n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n Follow on Instagram

Her program includes works by Grieg and Liszt – a composer with whom she is particularly identified. \n“Ms. Weber is … a concert pianist of cliffhanging panache and daredevil brilliance.” Ellen Pfeifer\, The Wall Street Journal \nHer world premiere recording of Liszt’s 1838 Transcendental Etudes elicited acclaim from Time Magazine: “Liszt later simplified these pieces into the still ferociously difficult Transcendental Etudes (1852 version) for fear that no one else could play them. There may now be several fire-eating piano virtuosos who can execute the original notes\, but few can liberate the prophetic music they contain as masterfully as Janice Weber does here.” \nMs. Weber recorded Liszt’s last Hungarian Rhapsody\, one of only two living pianists to be included in a compendium of historic performances by nineteen legendary artists. This disc subsequently won the International Liszt Prize. Her recordings also include Rachmaninoff’s complete transcriptions; with the Lydian Quartet\, Leo Ornstein’s vast Piano Quintet; flute and piano works of Sigfrid Karg-Elert; and waltz transcriptions of Godowsky\, Rosenthal\, and Friedman. \nHer Naxos recording of Leo Ornstein’s radical works introduced the charismatic composer to a worldwide audience. She is heard in Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time on Ongaku Records and her newest disc\, Cascade of Roses (Dorian Sono Luminus)\,features works of twenty-one composers from Adolf Jensen to Billy Mayerl. \nA summa cum laude graduate of the Eastman School of Music\, Janice Weber has performed at the White House\, Carnegie Hall\, Wigmore Hall\, National Gallery of Art\, and Boston’s Symphony Hall. She has appeared with the Boston Pops\, Chautauqua Symphony\, New Jersey Symphony\, Hilton Head Orchestra\, Sarajevo Philharmonic\, and Syracuse Symphony. She has performed at the Bard\, Newport\, La Gesse\, Husum\, and Monadnock summer festivals and has twice toured China under the auspices of the American Liszt Society. \nShe was a member of the piano faculty at Boston Conservatory for twenty-seven years and has taught at MIT and New England Conservatory. \nMs. Weber is also a published author. Her novels\, most of which have something to do with music\, have a worldwide following. She also produced the tones for Ivory\, the worldwide bestselling virtual piano software. \nShe is a Steinway artist. \n————————- \nMs. Weber’s Program: \nPrelude and Fugue in E minor\, Op. 35 No. 1\nFelix Mendelssohn (1809 – 1847) \nLyric Pieces\nEdvard Grieg (1843 – 1907) \nTo Spring\, Op. 43 No. 6\nMarch of the Trolls\, Op. 54 No. 3\nButterfly\, Op. 43 No. 1\nPeace of the Woods\, Op. 71 No. 4\nWedding Day at Troldhaugen\, Op. 65 No. 6 \nVariations on a Theme of Corelli\, Op. 42\nSergei Rachmaninoff (1873 – 1943) \nINTERMISSION \nSt. Francis of Assisi Preaching to the Birds\nSt. Francis of Assisi Walking on the Waters\nFranz Liszt (1811 – 1886) \nHarmonies du Soir \nHungarian Rhapsody No. 12 \nLEARN MORE + PURCHASE TICKETSStudent Piano Recital: Sunday\, October 6th\, at 3:00 pm (Free Admission)Location: Barn Gallery\, 3 Hartwig Lane (off Bournes Lane or Shore Rd)\, Ogunquit\nPrice: Free Admission \nThe Festival’s Student Piano Recital\, showcases up to 15 of the area’s best young pianists\, performing on Ogunquit Performing Art Committee’s famed Steinway piano. A pianist herself\, Betty studied\, performed and taught piano for most of her life. She also saw to it that OPA acquired its spectacular Steinway Concert Model C Grand Piano\, which still remains OPA’s greatest treasure. \nThe Ogunquit Performing Arts Committee was Betty’s brain-child. Her love of Ogunquit was matched by her love of the piano\, which she studied and taught for most of her life. She long dreamed of the possibility that Ogunquit could support a program of musical performances to add to its attractiveness as a welcoming place for painters\, sculptors and summer theatre. \nWhen her father\, S. Judson Dunaway\, died in 1976\, his will directed that a portion of his estate be donated to charitable causes. Betty requested that the executors include a contribution to Ogunquit to endow a fund to help support musical performances\, some to be held at the Dunaway Center\, which he earlier had donated to the town. When this endowment was in place\, the Committee for the Performing Arts was formed and began its work\, with Betty elected as chairperson. \nLEARN MORETicket Prices and Additional DetailsTickets to these performances are available on the Ogunquit Performing Arts website. \nLEARN MOREAdditional Events: 17th Annual Elizabeth Dunaway Burnham Piano Festival at Barn Gallery in Ogunquit\, Maine\n Janice Weber: Friday\, October 4\, 2024\, 7:30 p.m.Location: Barn Gallery\, 3 Hartwig Lane (off Bournes Lane at Shore Rd)\, Ogunquit\nPrice: $20 in advance; $25 at the door \nWorld-class pianist\, Janice Weber\, returns for her fifth appearance in Ogunquit\, this time bringing with her a dazzling program of works by Grieg and Liszt. \nJanice Weber is a vivacious performer with a reputation for programing the most exciting and technically challenging selections – which certainly applies to her upcoming performance for OPA! Body language is a very important part of achieving a likeness. Therefore\, I do not pose my models. I talk with them after they seat themselves. The more we talk the more comfortable they tend to become in the chair and in my company. I watch them move about in the chair until I am struck with a composition. Left to position them selves with no more direction than sitting or standing\, the subject will take a pose that is characteristic of them. \nOnce we have a pose which suits both their comfort and my inspiration I begin to choose back ground colors and set the lights. Selecting the right size and proportioned canvas is next. I begin drawing in charcoal on the canvas. Correcting the anatomy and placement continuously. Developing the drawing can take up to an hour or more. \nWhen satisfied I spray with fixative and begin painting. I first analyze the subject’s flesh-tones and decide on the colors I will use. I lay in my large dark shadow shapes first\, beginning with the eyes and then working all over the face and down through the body. Constantly painting the colors and values I identify. Then I paint in the local colors\, or mid tone shapes. Lastly I paint in the lights. I strive to cover the entire canvas with paint as soon as possible. Since I work on a white canvas it is important to establish and overstate my values in the first stages. \nNow I have my “knock in” which I will then devote hours to repainting until I am satisfied with the finish. The face can take me from six hours to infinity. Sometimes new starts are needed. \nPortraiture is one of the more difficult expressions of painting. It demands a command of the anatomy\, color\, and composition. The success of portrait painting is to first and foremost commit myself to the art of making a good painting. A well-composed interesting painting conveying an inspired moment. A downward glance. A woman in a red hat. A woman defiantly smoking a cigarette. \nI do not work from photos. The interaction between myself and the model is of paramount importance. The animation of my subject which occurs during our relaxed sessions is what helps me to understand the structure of their face and body movements. It enables me to achieve the personality of the subject. Secondly\, the camera does not provide enough of the spacial depth (in terms of subtle but necessary transitions of temperature and intensity of color) needed to recede or project the form in space. Since my approach to all work is that of the impressionist school\, working from life is essential with still life and plein air painting\, as well as portraiture. \nMy approach to laying in a portrait is also the progression of steps I use in all my work. I first decide what my most striking impression is of my subject. The light. The palette. The scale. The emotional response to a moment in time that will never occur again. \nCLICK HERE TO READ AN INTERVIEW WITH PAMELA DULONG WILLIAMS \nLEARN MORE: pameladulongwilliams.com \nAbout Russel Whitten (painter)ARTIST BIO: Russel WhittenRussel Whitten studied art at Maine College of Art\, Heartwood College of Art and the Art Students League of New York. SUMMARY:Barn Gallery Talk - Showcase Artists: Janet Ledoux + Anne Strout

As the Pandemic surged\, my husband and I scrambled to finish the house and move while he retired. I was surprised to find my painting process upended by this onrush of change\, and I took a breath and stopped working while I figured out how to begin again. These paintings are some of the art I have made as I slowly regained my path as a painter. They are art of the space all around me\, my new studio\, my new landscape\, and my new life. \nI paint in oil directly from life\, often outdoors\, editing the many details into a simpler and more powerful whole. Although the work can vary from direct perceptual painting to a more markedly abstracted approach\, the idea of something observed and distilled is always there. The subject is often the light\, the geometry in boulders and trees\, the language of color\, movement\, or people and our interaction with the world. I use oil paints for most of my paintings. Oil allows for more editing\, layering\, and altering as I rework a painting. I search for clarity by simplifying the subject to communicate through the language of paint. I have been influenced and aided by so many artists past and present. The art of Fairfield Porter and Lois Dodd continues to resonate for me\, among many others.” \nBiography \nMid Coast Maine painter Janet Ledoux makes oil paintings that capture the changing light and weather\, and the people in the landscape. Her work is noted for strong design and inventive color. A juried member of the historic Ogunquit Art Association\, Janet is widely collected. \nJanet was raised in Hartland\, CT and graduated from the Paier College of Art in New Haven\, CT in 1980. After completing a 20-year career as an award winning Illustrator and Art Director\, she began painting and exhibiting full time in 2000. Residency awards include the National Park Service and the Vermont Studio Center. \nLEARN MORE: janetledoux.com \nAbout Anne Strout – Painter“I have done art in one form or another since I was little. I had a career in nursing and raised five kids\, extended family\, and did artwork on the side to keep me grounded. For years I have taken art courses and gone on art retreats and art vacations. I love color and my paintings usually have a narrative element to them\, celebrating life with an emphasis on reinvention and rejuvenation. \nThe Title of my show is called Rejuvenation. The theme is portraying things we do to make us happy\, as simple as having coffee in the morning\, planning a garden\, or having an adventure. I love mixed media\, and paint in watercolor and acrylics\, but generally these days I am painting with wax; hot or cold! Encaustic painting\, hot wax\,involves a heat gun (or torch)\, a heated palette\, and pigmented wax. You can do this on several different substrates; paper\, wood panel\, or canvas. I usually use wood panels for my encaustic paintings. You may also embed objects\,create texture\, and employ mixed media\, image transfer\, and stencils. Cold wax is a process of mixing “cold wax” which is beeswax (if using Gamblin’s) and damar resin\, a substance that looks like lard\, with oil paints. When mixed\, the paint becomes very thick. It is not put on the canvas with brushes\, but palette knives\, brayers\, or squeegees. I work with thin layers. The substrate may be canvas\, wooden panel\, or paper. Again\, you may embed collage elements\, graphite\, oil sticks or pastels\, or pigmented alcohol to the cold wax painting.” \nArtist Statement: Anne Strout. \nMuch of my work speaks to the obstacles and adversities we all face in our daily human struggles. The emphasis is on reinvention and optimism. Encaustic and mixed media help me with these narratives\, as I employ multiple layers\, colors\, and often embedded objects to metaphorically address the past\, and the hope of the future. \nLEARN MORE: annestrout.com \nBarn Gallery 2023: Exhibitions\, Gallery Talks\, Workshops\, Demos\, Auction\, More…Learn more about the Barn Gallery 2023 Schedule: barngallery.org/2023-season \nLEARN MOREConnect With #BarnGallery on Instagram\n\n	\n	\n \n	\n \n SAVE THE DATE: For 46 years\, Barn Gallery has open\n \n \n	\n\n	\n \n ATTENTION ARTISTS: The Ogunquit Art Association — \n \n \n	\n	\n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n Follow on Instagram

SUMMARY:Barn Gallery Talk - Showcase Artists | Dustan Knight + Antoinette Prien Schultze
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Barn Gallery on Thursday\, June 8th (at 6 PM) for a Barn Gallery Talk by two of our Opening Exhibition Showcase Artists: Dustan Knight (Painter) and Antoinette Prien Schultze (Sculptor). \nMeet the artists\, see their work\, learn about their processes\, and ask questions. \nThese insightful and inspiring Gallery Talks always provide further insight into our exhibitions and give attendees the chance to hear stories + learn tips and tricks from present day juried artist-members of the Ogunquit Art Association\, Maine’s Original Artists’ Group (est. 1928). \nThis is a FREE event and it is open to the public. \nAbout Dustan Knight – Painter“My process is exploratory – encouraging the artwork to unfold as I make it. I start with a memory: a place\, a time\, a feeling; like walking on a wide beach early when bits of dawn color are reflected in rivulets of falling tide. Maybe it was a cold morning and I kept my shoes on and pulled my sweatshirt hood up over my ears. I keep those ideas as I choose colors and techniques\, working until it feels absolutely right; much more what I remember then a photo could ever capture.” \nDustan Knight is a professional artist\, educator\, and art writer. \nShe earned her Masters in Fine Art from Pratt Institute in NYC and her MA in Art History from Boston University. She is a recipient of a NH State Fellowship for the Arts\, a MacDowell Colony residency\, and a past Cummington Artist Colony resident. Dustan is represented by galleries across the US\, including Art Three in Manchester\, the Ogunquit Art Association in Maine. She’s a contributing writer to Art New England\, a frequent juror\, and gives demonstrations and workshops in watercolor\, art business\, and art history. Her work has appeared in Watercolor Magazine\, Daniel Smith\, Cheap Joe’s and Ampersand Insider Newsletters. Dustan’s work is in many private and public collections\, including Macy’s\, Acme and Oracles as well as numerous hospitals and New Hampshire public buildings. \nLEARN MORE: dustanknight.com \nAbout Antoinette Prien Schultze – Sculptor“I discovered my need to express myself creating art\, along with my ability at 17\, while living in NYC. I visited museums and sat in on history classes at Columbia where my husband was a student. I worked with clay\, than wood\, and on to marble. I worked daily for years. I was juried into the Ogunquit Art Association in 1981. In 1983 I won my first public commission. In 1986 I won the commission to create Manchester NH’s “Mill Girl”\, a 10 ft. bronze figure. In 1988 I completed “Life Entwined” the large marble sculpture that is in the permanent collection of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art (OMAA) in Ogunquit\, Maine. My work is in University collections\, Botanical Gardens\, and Museums\, most recently my 15 ft black granite sculpture “Remembrance” was purchased for the Jule Collins Smith Museum at Auburn University\, Auburn\, Alabama.” \nArtist Statement: Antoinette Prien Schultze. \nI have been carving since 1969. My sculptures have evolved from realistic to abstraction\, with my philosophical focus and medium of expression remaining constant. In 2006 I was able to build a large studio behind my home. It is here that I strive to create forms that are visually beautiful and comfortable in the landscape\, exhibiting strength along with the frailty that I see in existence. \nI use the natural and eternal presentation that stone affects to carve abstract forms that reflect our common humanity and express the wonder and beauty that is of our world. I flag each sculpture with ethereal colored glass that sparkles with light and throws reflections of color onto the surrounding surfaces of the sculpture. The stone and wood that I carve project a feeling of strength and stability\, and the addition of glass (representing our passions and feelings) renders a vulnerable and fragile quality to my art. This quality of opposites\, strength and fragility\, is a reminder of the beautiful balancing act that is ever present in nature. \nI use an electric angle grinder and an impact drill with diamond blades and bits\, along with hand tools such as chisels and hammer and rasps to shape and finish each sculpture. The caste glass is broken into shape with a hammer and chisel. \nLEARN MORE: antoinettepschultze.com \nBarn Gallery 2023: Exhibitions\, Gallery Talks\, Workshops\, Demos\, Auction\, More…Learn more about the Barn Gallery 2023 Schedule: barngallery.org/2023-season \nLEARN MOREConnect With #BarnGallery on Instagram\n\n	\n	\n \n	\n \n SAVE THE DATE: For 46 years\, Barn Gallery has open\n \n \n	\n\n	\n \n ATTENTION ARTISTS: The Ogunquit Art Association — \n \n \n	\n	\n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n Follow on Instagram
