Her work has been exhibited throughout the US and China. \nShe has taught painting and drawing in various colleges including the University of New Hampshire. \nIn 2007 Shiao-Ping won a Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. That’s where I want to be with my art. I want to make something no one\, not even me\, has seen before. \nWhen I begin a painting I usually have very little idea where I’ll be going with it. I find that if I attempt to plan a painting or even sketch an idea beforehand I get bored and it never appears like the plan anyway. I endeavor to stay alert to any story which unfolds before my eyes and especially open to those happy accidents which happen if you’re experimenting and staying free. \n\n\nSee an Ogunquit Art Association interview with Shaune McCarthy: CLICK HERE! \nLEARN MORE: shaunemccarthy.com \n\nBarn Gallery 2026: Exhibitions\, Gallery Talks\, Workshops\, Demos\, Auction\, More…Learn more about the Barn Gallery 2026 Schedule: barngallery.org/2026-season \nLEARN MOREConnect With #BarnGallery on Instagram\n\n	\n	\n \n	\n \n SAVE THE DATE: For 46 years\, Barn Gallery has open\n \n \n	\n\n	\n \n ATTENTION ARTISTS: The Ogunquit Art Association — \n \n \n	\n	\n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n Follow on Instagram

Body language is a very important part of achieving a likeness. Therefore\, I do not pose my models. I talk with them after they seat themselves. The more we talk the more comfortable they tend to become in the chair and in my company. I watch them move about in the chair until I am struck with a composition. Left to position them selves with no more direction than sitting or standing\, the subject will take a pose that is characteristic of them. \nOnce we have a pose which suits both their comfort and my inspiration I begin to choose back ground colors and set the lights. Selecting the right size and proportioned canvas is next. I begin drawing in charcoal on the canvas. Correcting the anatomy and placement continuously. Developing the drawing can take up to an hour or more. \nWhen satisfied I spray with fixative and begin painting. I first analyze the subject’s flesh-tones and decide on the colors I will use. I lay in my large dark shadow shapes first\, beginning with the eyes and then working all over the face and down through the body. Constantly painting the colors and values I identify. Then I paint in the local colors\, or mid tone shapes. Lastly I paint in the lights. I strive to cover the entire canvas with paint as soon as possible. Since I work on a white canvas it is important to establish and overstate my values in the first stages. \nNow I have my “knock in” which I will then devote hours to repainting until I am satisfied with the finish. The face can take me from six hours to infinity. Sometimes new starts are needed. \nPortraiture is one of the more difficult expressions of painting. It demands a command of the anatomy\, color\, and composition. The success of portrait painting is to first and foremost commit myself to the art of making a good painting. A well-composed interesting painting conveying an inspired moment. A downward glance. A woman in a red hat. A woman defiantly smoking a cigarette. \nI do not work from photos. The interaction between myself and the model is of paramount importance. The animation of my subject which occurs during our relaxed sessions is what helps me to understand the structure of their face and body movements. It enables me to achieve the personality of the subject. Secondly\, the camera does not provide enough of the spacial depth (in terms of subtle but necessary transitions of temperature and intensity of color) needed to recede or project the form in space. Since my approach to all work is that of the impressionist school\, working from life is essential with still life and plein air painting\, as well as portraiture. \nMy approach to laying in a portrait is also the progression of steps I use in all my work. I first decide what my most striking impression is of my subject. The light. The palette. The scale. The emotional response to a moment in time that will never occur again. \nCLICK HERE TO READ AN INTERVIEW WITH PAMELA DULONG WILLIAMS \nLEARN MORE: pameladulongwilliams.com \nAbout Russel Whitten (painter)ARTIST BIO: Russel WhittenRussel Whitten studied art at Maine College of Art\, Heartwood College of Art and the Art Students League of New York. He is represented by The Wright Gallery in Cape Porpoise and is a member and showing artist with The Ogunquit Arts Association/Barn Gallery. \nRussel has been teaching for 20 years at art institutions in Southern Maine including Rivertree Center for the Arts in Kennebunk\, Sanctuary Arts in Eliot\, Old Orchard Beach Adult Education\, Wells Adult Education and The University of New England in Biddeford. SUMMARY:Barn Gallery Talk - Showcase Artists: Janet Ledoux + Anne Strout
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Barn Gallery on Thursday\, August 17th (at 6 PM) for a Barn Gallery Talk by two of our Late Summer Exhibition Showcase Artists: Janet Ledoux (Painter) and Anne Strout (Painter). \nMeet the artists\, see their work\, learn about their processes\, and ask questions. \nThese insightful and inspiring Gallery Talks always provide further insight into our exhibitions and give attendees the chance to hear stories + learn tips and tricks from present day juried artist-members of the Ogunquit Art Association\, Maine’s Original Artists’ Group (est. 1928). \nThis is a FREE event and it is open to the public. \nfeatured image above: (L) Janet Ledoux; Darrow’s Barn 3 (detail); 14 x 18″; (R) Anne Strout; Gardening was Her Religion (detail)\, cold wax\, 20”x20”.\n \nAbout Janet Ledoux – PainterShowcase Title – Begin Again \n“As 2020 arrived\, I was in the process of building a house in Jefferson\, Maine\, on a lake not far from the Atlantic. As the Pandemic surged\, my husband and I scrambled to finish the house and move while he retired. I was surprised to find my painting process upended by this onrush of change\, and I took a breath and stopped working while I figured out how to begin again. These paintings are some of the art I have made as I slowly regained my path as a painter. They are art of the space all around me\, my new studio\, my new landscape\, and my new life. \nI paint in oil directly from life\, often outdoors\, editing the many details into a simpler and more powerful whole. Although the work can vary from direct perceptual painting to a more markedly abstracted approach\, the idea of something observed and distilled is always there. The subject is often the light\, the geometry in boulders and trees\, the language of color\, movement\, or people and our interaction with the world. I use oil paints for most of my paintings. Oil allows for more editing\, layering\, and altering as I rework a painting. I search for clarity by simplifying the subject to communicate through the language of paint. I have been influenced and aided by so many artists past and present. The art of Fairfield Porter and Lois Dodd continues to resonate for me\, among many others.” \nBiography \nMid Coast Maine painter Janet Ledoux makes oil paintings that capture the changing light and weather\, and the people in the landscape. Her work is noted for strong design and inventive color. A juried member of the historic Ogunquit Art Association\, Janet is widely collected. \nJanet was raised in Hartland\, CT and graduated from the Paier College of Art in New Haven\, CT in 1980. After completing a 20-year career as an award winning Illustrator and Art Director\, she began painting and exhibiting full time in 2000. Residency awards include the National Park Service and the Vermont Studio Center. \nLEARN MORE: janetledoux.com \nAbout Anne Strout – Painter“I have done art in one form or another since I was little. I had a career in nursing and raised five kids\, extended family\, and did artwork on the side to keep me grounded. For years I have taken art courses and gone on art retreats and art vacations. I love color and my paintings usually have a narrative element to them\, celebrating life with an emphasis on reinvention and rejuvenation. \nThe Title of my show is called Rejuvenation. The theme is portraying things we do to make us happy\, as simple as having coffee in the morning\, planning a garden\, or having an adventure. I love mixed media\, and paint in watercolor and acrylics\, but generally these days I am painting with wax; hot or cold! Encaustic painting\, hot wax\,involves a heat gun (or torch)\, a heated palette\, and pigmented wax. You can do this on several different substrates; paper\, wood panel\, or canvas. I usually use wood panels for my encaustic paintings. You may also embed objects\,create texture\, and employ mixed media\, image transfer\, and stencils. Cold wax is a process of mixing “cold wax” which is beeswax (if using Gamblin’s) and damar resin\, a substance that looks like lard\, with oil paints. When mixed\, the paint becomes very thick. It is not put on the canvas with brushes\, but palette knives\, brayers\, or squeegees. I work with thin layers. The substrate may be canvas\, wooden panel\, or paper. Again\, you may embed collage elements\, graphite\, oil sticks or pastels\, or pigmented alcohol to the cold wax painting.” \nArtist Statement: Anne Strout. \nMuch of my work speaks to the obstacles and adversities we all face in our daily human struggles. The emphasis is on reinvention and optimism. Encaustic and mixed media help me with these narratives\, as I employ multiple layers\, colors\, and often embedded objects to metaphorically address the past\, and the hope of the future. \nLEARN MORE: annestrout.com \nBarn Gallery 2023: Exhibitions\, Gallery Talks\, Workshops\, Demos\, Auction\, More…Learn more about the Barn Gallery 2023 Schedule: barngallery.org/2023-season \nLEARN MOREConnect With #BarnGallery on Instagram\n\n	\n	\n \n	\n \n SAVE THE DATE: For 46 years\, Barn Gallery has open\n \n \n	\n\n	\n \n ATTENTION ARTISTS: The Ogunquit Art Association — \n \n \n	\n	\n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n Follow on Instagram

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Barn Gallery on Thursday\, June 8th (at 6 PM) for a Barn Gallery Talk by two of our Opening Exhibition Showcase Artists: Dustan Knight (Painter) and Antoinette Prien Schultze (Sculptor). \nAbout Dustan Knight – Painter“My process is exploratory – encouraging the artwork to unfold as I make it. I start with a memory: a place\, a time\, a feeling; like walking on a wide beach early when bits of dawn color are reflected in rivulets of falling tide. Maybe it was a cold morning and I kept my shoes on and pulled my sweatshirt hood up over my ears. I keep those ideas as I choose colors and techniques\, working until it feels absolutely right; much more what I remember then a photo could ever capture.” \nDustan Knight is a professional artist\, educator\, and art writer. \nShe earned her Masters in Fine Art from Pratt Institute in NYC and her MA in Art History from Boston University. She is a recipient of a NH State Fellowship for the Arts\, a MacDowell Colony residency\, and a past Cummington Artist Colony resident. Dustan is represented by galleries across the US\, including Art Three in Manchester\, the Ogunquit Art Association in Maine. She’s a contributing writer to Art New England\, a frequent juror\, and gives demonstrations and workshops in watercolor\, art business\, and art history. Her work has appeared in Watercolor Magazine\, Daniel Smith\, Cheap Joe’s and Ampersand Insider Newsletters. Dustan’s work is in many private and public collections\, including Macy’s\, Acme and Oracles as well as numerous hospitals and New Hampshire public buildings. \nLEARN MORE: dustanknight.com \nAbout Antoinette Prien Schultze – Sculptor“I discovered my need to express myself creating art\, along with my ability at 17\, while living in NYC. I visited museums and sat in on history classes at Columbia where my husband was a student. I worked with clay\, than wood\, and on to marble. I worked daily for years. I was juried into the Ogunquit Art Association in 1981. In 1983 I won my first public commission. In 1986 I won the commission to create Manchester NH’s “Mill Girl”\, a 10 ft. bronze figure. In 1988 I completed “Life Entwined” the large marble sculpture that is in the permanent collection of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art (OMAA) in Ogunquit\, Maine. My work is in University collections\, Botanical Gardens\, and Museums\, most recently my 15 ft black granite sculpture “Remembrance” was purchased for the Jule Collins Smith Museum at Auburn University\, Auburn\, Alabama.” \nArtist Statement: Antoinette Prien Schultze. \nI have been carving since 1969. My sculptures have evolved from realistic to abstraction\, with my philosophical focus and medium of expression remaining constant. In 2006 I was able to build a large studio behind my home. It is here that I strive to create forms that are visually beautiful and comfortable in the landscape\, exhibiting strength along with the frailty that I see in existence. \nI use the natural and eternal presentation that stone affects to carve abstract forms that reflect our common humanity and express the wonder and beauty that is of our world. I flag each sculpture with ethereal colored glass that sparkles with light and throws reflections of color onto the surrounding surfaces of the sculpture. The stone and wood that I carve project a feeling of strength and stability\, and the addition of glass (representing our passions and feelings) renders a vulnerable and fragile quality to my art. This quality of opposites\, strength and fragility\, is a reminder of the beautiful balancing act that is ever present in nature. \nI use an electric angle grinder and an impact drill with diamond blades and bits\, along with hand tools such as chisels and hammer and rasps to shape and finish each sculpture. The caste glass is broken into shape with a hammer and chisel. \nLEARN MORE: antoinettepschultze.com \nBarn Gallery 2023: Exhibitions\, Gallery Talks\, Workshops\, Demos\, Auction\, More…Learn more about the Barn Gallery 2023 Schedule: barngallery.org/2023-season \nLEARN MOREConnect With #BarnGallery on Instagram\n\n	\n	\n \n	\n \n SAVE THE DATE: For 46 years\, Barn Gallery has open\n \n \n	\n\n	\n \n ATTENTION ARTISTS: The Ogunquit Art Association — \n \n \n	\n	\n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n Follow on Instagram

SUMMARY:Barn Gallery Talk - Showcase Artists | Christopher Gowell + Kimberly Meuse
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Barn Gallery on Thursday\, August 18th (at 6 PM) for a Barn Gallery Talk by two of our Showcase Artists: Christopher Gowell (Sculptor/Painter) and Kimberly Meuse (Painter). \n  \nAbout Christopher Gowell – Sculptor/Painter\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n  \nChristopher Gowell is a sculptor\, painter\, and director of Sanctuary Arts\, an artists’ residential and studio community with a “skill-based” art school and bronze casting teaching foundry. There she lives\, and has her studio in an active arts environment. \n“My art education began as a child at Munson Williams Proctor Institute\, a museum school in Utica\, New York. I attended Syracuse University for two years\, took sculpture classes at the Corcoran School of Art and George Washington University\, and completed my undergraduate degree (Summa Cum Laude) at the University of New Hampshire in 1974. I earned my Master of Fine Arts from Boston University in 1977\, working as a graduate assistant teaching basic and intermediate figure sculpture. My commissions include a tidal pool relief for the Seacoast Science Center in Rye\, NH\, a bronze fountain of Alexander the Great with two companions\, a six foot bronze of an 1870’s millworker and her son for Nashua New Hampshire’s waterfront\, and an eight foot by seven foot fire fighter’s memorial for the Manchester NH fire department. I also design and carve traditional slate tombstones\, most of them for Martha’s Vineyard.“ \nLearn More: christophergowell.com \n  \nAbout Kimberly Meuse – Painter\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n  \nKimberly is self-taught in her style of watercolor painting\, after an introductory course in college where she studied Graphic Design opened the door to the wonders and challenges of the medium. The graphic design world focuses on simplifying messages\, while Kimberly’s eye consistently sought the finer points and sumptuous detail. After a decade of working in corporate design\, she followed her heart to fine art and watercolor. \nTaking watercolor painting from a generally loose methodology to create works that defy the confines of representational painting\, she has surmounted the challenges inherent in water-based media to create exquisitely deep\, rich paintings that have become a career-long passion. \n“A random collection of colorful glassware can be an interesting arrangement\, but it becomes visually stunning with a glint of sunlight. That transformation of ordinary into glorious is as fleeting as the stray beam of light that creates it. As a painter I’ve chased those moments to share through my work\, creating paintings that are brought to life by fluid movement through the play of light and vivid detail..” \nLearn More: kimberlymeuse.com \n  \n  \nLearn more about Barn Gallery\nThere’s plenty to do and see at Barn Gallery this summer! SUMMARY:Barn Gallery Talk - Showcase Artists | Todd Bezold + Efram Burk
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Barn Gallery on Thursday\, July 14 (at 6 PM) for a Barn Gallery Talk by two of our Opening Exhibition Showcase Artists: Todd Bezold (Painter) and Efram Burk (Graphic Artist). \n  \nAbout Todd Bezold – Painter\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Todd Bezold\n \n \n \n\n“The coastal environments and deep woodlands of New England are rich with refracted light\, with intimate enclosed spaces surrounding pools and streams. I depict these subjects with a simplified application of color forms\, adjusting tonality to imply space. My goal is to paint Mount Agamenticus from the peak to views of the mountain itself from distant vantage points.” \nLearn More: artfoureyes.com \n  \nAbout Efram Burk – Photographer/Graphics\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Efram Burk\n \n \n \n\n“My exercise is purely formal. I select what the viewer will ultimately see\, a process involving considerations of: pattern and rhythm\, juxtapositions in scale and contrast between foreground/background forms\, surface texture\, and light. I never want the space to reveal itself too quickly—there seems to be more mystery\, surprise and intrigue in asking: how does this scene work? How does everything fit together? When is there too much information in a particular composition? When does it become too obvious? These are questions I constantly ask myself as I try and abstract my source. In large part I’m drawn to abstracting my subject with an eye for aesthetic balance\, an overall symmetry\, an ensemble\, a gestalt. The choppiness and disintegration of Cubism is also of immense influence to me\, as I strive to touch upon\, what I like to call\, the poetry of fragmentation.” \n   \n
