Home of the Ogunquit Art Association
– Maine’s Original Artists’ Group | est. 1928 –

Barn Gallery is owned and administered by the Ogunquit Arts Collaborative, a volunteer-run 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit corporation that is funded by contributions from the Friends of Ogunquit Art, gifts and donations, management fees and fundraising activities. The OAC is also the proud recipient of grants from the Maine Arts Commission, Kennebunk Savings Bank and The Joan Dwyer and Jane Dwyer Charitable Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation.

OAC has participated in two statewide collaborations of Maine arts organizations ranging from the Portland Museum of Art and Bowdoin College to the Ogunquit Museum of Art and Barn Gallery. The Maine Drawing Project in 2011 and The Maine Photo Project in 2015 featured exhibitions chosen by the various venues to illustrate the richness and variety of their collections and, in the case of Barn Gallery, the inventiveness and skill of their member artists. Barn Gallery held two exhibitions and a variety of panel discussions and programs for each Project. The catalogs, Ogunquit Art Association: Maine Drawing Project – Where to Draw the Line and Barn Gallery: Maine Photo Project: Photographers of the Ogunquit Art Association, both edited by Nancy R. Davison and designed by Tom Hibschman, are available at Barn Gallery.

Barn Gallery: Years of Excellence

Barn Gallery, built by Barn Gallery Associates (BGA) and the Ogunquit Art Association (OAA) in 1958-1959, provides an iconic exhibition space for OAA artists and a center for artistic activities. Together with the Ogunquit Museum of American Art and the Ogunquit Playhouse, it is a vital part of the lively cultural life of Ogunquit and the surrounding area. In 2003 BGA donated the building to the Ogunquit Arts Collaborative, a volunteer-run, not-for-profit corporation that owns and administers Barn Gallery.

The mission of the Ogunquit Arts Collaborative is to educate and enlighten the seacoast community by nurturing, supporting and presenting art by the OAA and other local fine artists. Artists and friends meet at the Barn to share exhibitions, programs about art and the creative process, and opportunities to create art.

As we continue to make preparations to open for our 2019 season - and begin our year-long celebration of the 60th Anniversary of Barn Gallery (PLUS the 91st year of active existence for the Ogunquit Art Association) - join us in extending a gracious and well-deserved thanks to our founder, Charles H. Woodbury! When he found his way to Ogunquit, Maine: Beautiful Place by the Sea on that momentous day back in 1888, he started a cultural ripple across the world that all of us at Barn Gallery are honored to continue adding our contributions to today! We also thank our Friends of Ogunquit Art, our neighbors in the community, and all art-loving visitors to our town who make the time to visit Barn Gallery during their stays. We look forward to seeing plenty of old friends + new faces this year after we open on Wednesday, May 22nd!

The Ogunquit Art Association, founded in 1928 by Charles H. Woodbury and other area artists, brings together professional artists to exhibit their finest work. The OAA’s original mission statement offers the public ‘the opportunity for aesthetic experience and the acquisition of works of art.’ It offers artists life-long memberships and the opportunity ‘to display that which is, in his or her own judgment, his or her finest work, free from the usual vagaries of popular opinion and fashions of taste. This brings into view a true representation of art from the artists’ point of view.’
