Continue reading below for some excerpts from a discussion we had with Karen Bushold about her background and work.

What is the title of your Showcase and how does your artwork reflect it?

Although there is not an actual title something like “Tales Of Time and Travels” world work. Many of the images come from my travels and reflect how life and places change.

What techniques, materials and ideas will you be showcasing?

All the images have been photographed with digital cameras and printed on inkjet printers. A goodly number off the photos involve architecture so having just the right light conditions is extremely important.

Are your titles important to your artwork?

Yes, my titles are important but they avoid abstract mood or emotional terms. Many are pithy and humorous like “Coca Cola” or “Stiletto”. Others tend to be terse and simple like “Miami” or “Odalisque”. Get to the point.

How does this body of artwork fit into your larger art production?

The images pretty much reflect my style of shooting which is peripatetic based…walking the streets. I love street art, architecture and the flow of human movement. Encounter by surprise or accident is central to my modus operandi.

How long has the Ogunquit Art Association been a part of your art career?

I have been a member for the last fifteen years but my husband has been in the OAA for over thirty years. So the OAA has been a central feature of my creative life as well as my exhibiting career.

What are your future art plans?

I plan to continue to travel and photograph in order to seek out new environments, meet new people and explore new situations. With the handy iPhone there is always the new possibility of videography to augment still imagery.

My photographs combine bright colors and patterns of painted surfaces with elements fromnature and human intervention. My prints focus on subjects and details that are often overlooked but can reveal fresh juxtapositions that challenge our first look and make us take a second.
