On Tuesday, July 12 there was an inspiring Watercolor Workshop: “Still-Life: Simple Values & Shadows” led by Ogunquit Art Association artist-member Russel Whitten at Barn Gallery in Ogunquit.
Russel Whitten is an accomplished local artist/teacher. Hestudied at The Art Students League of New York, the Heartwood College of Art, and he is a juried artist-member of The Ogunquit Art Association, Maine’s Original Artists’ Group.
Whitten’s class provided training in the direct observation of form and its surrounding elements.
The emphasis was on drawing and controlling watercolor media while recreating the appearance of nature with use of surrounding still life forms.
Demonstrating with watercolor, Whitten showed the development of forms as derived from the study of perspective, composition, value and color. Breaking down the visual study into simple values as a means to understand shadows and the illusion of 3-dimensional forms will be the foundation for this class.
Whitten showed the class how to set up a still life while analyzing light, shadows, and reflections, including how the elements of light and shade define form.
The annual demonstration and workshop schedule at Barn Gallery is such a valued resource to the local creative community – and the perfect way to participate in the long-enduring legacy of practicing the arts in Ogunquit, Maine. It’s always a joy to learn techniques from an artist the caliber of Whitten.
