Everyone who joined us at Barn Gallery in Ogunquit, Maine for the recent Bookbinding Workshop led by Ogunquit Art Association artist-member Gayle Fitzpatrick got inspired, learned a lot, and had an enjoyable time!

A graduate of MassArt with a BFA in Painting, Fitzpatrick was the perfect artist to lead this workshop. She has been a passionate papermaker, printmaker, and book binder for over 40 years. Gayle’s works are exhibited at the Barn Gallery in Ogunquit as well as in juried shows throughout the US. Gayle has been listed on Maine Arts Commission, Teaching Artist’s Roster from 2016-Present.

This bookbinding workshop covered some basic bookending techniques so participants would come away with enough knowledge to start making their own artist’s books (works of art that utilize the form of the book), unique journals, and sketchbooks.

The workshop started with an introduction and information on bookbinding tools and paper. It then acquainted participants with the processes behind the creation of multiple book formats: a simple pamphlet book, a Japanese stab bound book, a basic codex, a hard cover accordion book, a soft cover book with signatures sewn on tapes, and flutter books.

Areas of focus centered on bookbinding techniques, structures, tools, and materials; including the use of hand-made papers.

Bookbinding is a compelling and rewarding activity. It was easy to see that if you start small, the passion for making all kinds of books grows! This is an art form with lot of room for experimentation. The ideas about book types can evolve from traditional forms to wherever your imagination will take you – the sky’s the limit! Some of the participants at this workshop even meet regularly throughout the year to share what they are creating, new techniques, and additional sources of materials including swapping materials with each other!
