The acclaimed skill set of figurative sculptor (and Ogunquit Art Association artist-member) Anthony Alemany were on full display during his recent Sculpture Demonstration: “Portrait from Life” at Barn Gallery in Ogunquit, Maine.

Anthony Alemany is a figurative sculptor in South Berwick, Maine. He was born in Chattanooga, TN and grew up in Ringgold, GA. Anthony graduated with a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design and traveled to Italy to study at the Florence Academy of Art for a foundation in traditional sculpture. After moving to Maine, he worked for 8 years in business management and discovered his passion for sculpture was inescapable. Anthony now works as a full-time sculptor. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in both national and international competitions.

It was almost like alchemy, witnessing Alemany working from a live male model and seeing the artist transmute a block of clay into an evocative likeness of his subject over the course of a short 2 hour demonstration.

A rare thrill, to witness such an experienced artist as Alemany so at ease with his materials as he quickly makes decisive choices about the narrative of the piece at hand; the inspiration, feel, look, and pose; and then see him deliver tangible results of such substance over the course of such a restrictive time-line.

The art of sculpting is a very physical, emotional, and arduous process,” states Alemany. “The subject must be viewed intensely from every view and angle. 2 hours is the fastest demo I’ve ever done. I hope it offers but a glimpse into what it’s like.
