Every year, multiple artist-members of the Ogunquit Art Association (Maine’s Original Artists’ Group; est. 1928) participate in demonstrations and teach workshops at Barn Gallery. These popular events are open to the public (there is usually a modest suggested donation); and attendees who are lucky enough to secure spots at these workshops always glean a wealth of new techniques and ideas by tapping into the depth of professional experience being provided by their teacher.

On Wednesday, August 24th 2022, Barn Gallery hosted a Chinese Ink Painting workshop led by Ogunquit Art Association (OAA) artist-member Shaio-Ping Wang.

An accomplished artist + educator, Shiao-Ping Wang was born in Taiwan and immigrated to the United States in 1981. She studied both Western art and Chinese art in New York and earned a MFA degree from Queens College, City University of New York. She works both abstractly and from observation in various painting media. Her work has been exhibited throughout the US and China. She has taught painting and drawing in various colleges including the University of New Hampshire. In 2007 Shiao-Ping won a Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. In 2008 she won the Spotlight Award for Best Painter in the Seacoast.

This workshop explored the tonality and mark-making of traditional Chinese ink painting with subtle hints of watercolor. Students were taught to develop their sensibility of the “5 colors of grey” in ink and build a mark-making vocabulary that turns dots and strokes into plant and landscape paintings.

Wet and dry brush techniques, and tips regarding the finer points of brushwork, were demonstrated up close with a variety of Chinese paper of different absorbencies.
